The session provided an in-depth exploration of managing dashboard sprawl using Select Star, an intelligent metadata platform designed for data governance and data discovery. Dashboard sprawl arises from an organization’s data analytics evolution from spreadsheet to self-serve analytics. Select Star connects to data ecosystems and ingests metadata to help customers find data quickly and easily, get full context of their data, optimize and clean up their data ecosystem, collaborate easily and automate communication, and govern with fine-grained access control and PII classification. AlphaSense, a Select Star customer, presented a case study of how Select Star quickly identified dashboards affected by upstream data changes.

• Dashboard sprawl happens when many people in an organization are trying to make data-driven decisions, leading to multiple definitions of the same metric, ad hoc analyses commingled with vetted production reporting, slow response to upstream changes, and more.

• To navigate dashboard sprawl, organizations should track dashboard usage, deprecate or remodel unused or less used dashboards, and leverage data lineage to check upstream data sets and downstream impacts.

• AlphaSense shared how Select Star managed a potential crisis by analyzing metadata to identify the potential dashboards affected by upstream changes in data objects.

• Next in AlphaSense’s data analytics journey includes using Select Star to manage downstream dependencies in a data transformation tool migration, to detect schema changes and monitor for unadvertised upstream breaking changes, and to build an asset archival process and reduce dashboard sprawl.
